Chenyue Zhang visited MPI/Magdeburg and the Bielefeld University

Chenyue Zhang went three weeks to MPI/Magdeburg for simulation-based solvent screening for the model reactions in Cascade 4 of ONE-FLOW. Host was the Process System Engineering (PSE) group, which is supervised by Prof. Kai Sundmacher. The mission was to find a biphasic system for the organic catalyst and final product. Files of the molecules were generated in Turbomole. As well, candidate solvent lists were formed (conventional solvents and ionic liquids) based on solubility data. Further screening works will consider other properties, such as BP, MP, reactivity, and toxicity, and is in progress.

After her Magdeburg training, she is currently at the Bielefeld University, where she is working under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Harald Gröger from the Center for Biotechnology (CeBiTec) and Chair of  Organic Chemistry I of Bielefeld University. Purpose is to learn to conduct the chemistry of the chemobio cascade which has to be transferred from batch to continuous-flow and from normal to functional master solvents. This includes to be familiar with the analytics of the chemical reaction steps involved in the cascade. As well, Chenyue is focusing on how to measure enzyme concentration and activity which will act as biocatalysts. Part of the program is a social canoe tour event.
